Tarragona, the provincial capital, was catalogued as Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2000. Its Roman ruins—distributed throughout the entire city—are numerous and have been conserved well. The majority is located at the higher elevation and in the historic city centre. Highlights include the City Walls, the Archaeological Museum, the Roman Circus, the Praetorium, Forum and majestic Amphitheatre, all dating back to the first century.
And after soaking in the historical sites, take a stroll down La Rambla, visiting the shops and art studios, until you ‘touch the iron’ at the famous ‘Balcony of the Mediterranean’ (a railing running along the seaside promenade), from which you will enjoy privileged sea views.
