Vila-seca and the Port of Tarragona have started a large project called Cal·lípolis. This project will transform the heart of La Pineda with the construction of a new outer harbour wall close to the Prats beach, which will offer an open space integrated into the landscape and which, at the same time, will respect the coastal and marine environment. This space will serve a social purpose, with pine forests and wetland areas that will be connected to the protected space of the Red Natura 2000 de Prats de Albinyana, with several walking routes, lookouts, and other leisure areas.
The 37 hectares of wetland will be a natural reserve where native animal species, such as the Spanish pond turtle, the European pond turtle, and the Spanish toothcarp, and plant species such as groves, meadows, and reed beds will be reintroduced. It will also become a transit or nesting place for migratory birds such as Audouin’s gull and the flamingo, as a result of the creation of an internal lagoon with an area of more than 25,000 m².
Cal·lípolis will be the definitive solution to restore and stabilise La Pineda beach so that it can be resilient in the face of climate change, thus avoiding the need to add sand to the beach in future. The outer harbour wall will facilitate the natural accumulation of sand at both ends of the beach, while two new groynes, which are also used for social purposes, will help retain sand in the middle.
The project also provides for the restoration, consolidation, and museological conservation of the archaeological site in Cal·lípolis, a Roman villa located in this space dating from the first few centuries after Christ, as well as the impetus provided by a experiential and interpretation centre, which will provide an insight into the process for the recovery of protected animal species and natural spaces, the life of fauna and flora, and the birth and development of the Roman villa in Cal·lípolis.
Vila-seca, a gateway also by sea
The construction of the new outer harbour wall in Los Prats will see the arrival of cruise ships in Vila-seca, La Pineda Platja, a development that will have a significant impact on the territory, its business fabric, and its citizens.
With its broad tourist, cultural, leisure, and entertainment possibilities, Vila-seca, La Pineda Platja will become a key strategic point as an excellent destination.
Before the consolidation of this project, Vila-seca had begun to focus on the importance of this segment of the tourism market (cruise passengers) with the creation of a new tourism product; participation in institutional and technical meetings and conferences; assistance and support to fairs and family trips; and the disclosure of this new tourism product at the various tourism fairs, both domestic and overseas.
