Prats d’Albinyana, a new model of sustainability

The restoration project of Prats d’Albinyana, in La Pineda, is part of a broader vision of environmental transformation and territorial enhancement, with the aim of restoring a wetland of high ecological value within the Natura 2000 Network. Covering nearly forty hectares, the initiative—resulting from a collaboration between Vila-seca City Council and the Port of Tarragona—has made it possible to reestablish the natural dynamics characteristic of Mediterranean wetlands through the creation of a large lagoon, the recovery of riparian habitats, and the improvement of ecological connectivity. This process has encouraged the presence of native species; many of them endangered, and has consolidated the area as an environment of significant interest for biodiversity.

The City Council and the Port of Tarragona are continuing to move forward with the project to build a new breakwater next to Platja dels Prats. The development will create an open space fully integrated into the landscape while respecting the coastal and marine environment. The area will serve a social and recreational purpose, featuring pine groves and wetlands connected to the protected Natura 2000 site of Prats d’Albinyana, as well as walking routes, viewpoints, and other leisure spaces.

In this context, the future Cal·lípolis experiential centre takes on particular importance, conceived as a benchmark facility for interpreting the territory. This space will offer an integrated understanding of the natural values of Prats d’Albinyana and its surroundings, providing visitors with an engaging and immersive educational experience. The centre is intended to become a gateway to the wider natural area, with initiatives focused on environmental awareness, education, and responsible enjoyment.

Furthermore, the project incorporates a historical dimension through the enhancement of the Roman villa of Cal·lípolis, strengthening the connection between past and present. In this way, the new experiential centre will act as a unifying element of a narrative that combines cultural and natural heritage, helping to position Vila-seca, la Pineda Platja as a destination where sustainability, knowledge, and visitor experience take centre stage.
